Optimal Timing for Kikuyu Control
Early Autumn and Spring are the ideal times to implement a kikuyu control program. As kikuyu growth rate slows in Autumn, herbicides remain in the plant longer, reducing its ability to recover.
There are two main approaches to managing kikuyu when removing it from couch.
The First Approach
In a trial conducted by Jyri Kaapro in Western Sydney during Spring 2010 demonstrated a highly effective program, achieving over 90% control at 50 days post-final treatment. The recommended approach includes three herbicide applications:Â

Kikuyu Control:Â growth brought under control
Other Sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides, such as Monument, are also viable options.Â
DSMA enhances the uptake and translocation of Tribute, making it a crucial component of this program. MSMA, a chemical relative of DSMA, can provide similar results. Both chemistries are more effective when temperatures are around 25C so start applying in March. Please note this program is strictly for kikuyu control in couch. Since Tribute is an SU herbicide, extreme caution is required to prevent exposure to bentgrass or poa surfaces.Â

The effect of Drive XL: A great option if using Quinclorac.

Kikuyu Control: With and without Dirve XL.
For Golf Greens
If you’re looking to control kikuyu invasion on your golf greens, Pylex is the solution. However, achieving success requires a strict and consistent program maintained over several years.

Success with herbicide applications depends heavily on optimal spray conditions, including weather, water volume, adjuvant use, and other key factors.
