ThatchZyme in practice: Supporting organic matter management across golf and cricket.

Managing organic matter without compromising surface quality is a constant challenge for turf managers. Renovation windows can be short, playing schedules are demanding and disruptive mechanical practices are not always practical during the season.

Excess organic matter and layering can affect infiltration, moisture movement, consistency and overall turf performance. While mechanical practices remain an important part of organic matter management, ThatchZyme offers a complementary, minimally disruptive approach. Its enzyme technology targets the lignin component of thatch, helping support its natural breakdown within the profile.

At both Blue Lake Golf Club and the South Australian Cricket Association, ThatchZyme has been incorporated into broader organic matter management programs, with both sites reporting encouraging improvements in infiltration, surface consistency and turf performance.

Blue Lake Golf Club

At Blue Lake Golf Club, Superintendent Dan Christian was looking for a way to better manage organic matter and layering within the club’s greens.

“We trialled ThatchZyme as the science and data behind it indicated it would be a good fit into our maintenance program.”

Since incorporating ThatchZyme, Dan has seen encouraging changes in the greens, not only visible on the surface, but also within the profile.

“We’ve noticed an increase in infiltration, particularly over winter, along with reduced disease pressure. Our greens have been more uniform in turf coverage and you can see our profile has become cleaner when compared to areas ThatchZyme wasn’t applied.”

South Australian Cricket Association

The challenge is slightly different for the South Australian Cricket Association, where Grounds Manager Trent Kelly is managing high-performance cricket surfaces within a very limited renovation window.

“We have been using ThatchZyme to assist with our organic matter management. With our renovation window being quite limited, we decided to trial ThatchZyme as a way of managing our surfaces throughout the cricket season without the need for significant disruption.”

Since incorporating the product into the maintenance program, Trent has observed improvements in both infiltration and surface consistency.

“Since incorporating ThatchZyme into our program, we have noticed an improvement in infiltration rates, along with a more consistent look and feel across the surfaces. We have also seen healthier, more responsive turf, which has given us greater confidence in managing organic matter during the season while maintaining surface quality and playability.”

Maximising Results through a Complete Program

For best results, integrate ThatchZyme into a program alongside with MP Superior liquids such as MP Foundation and MP Promote. Together, they create a complementary approach that supports biological thatch breakdown and maximises the conversion of thatch into functional organic matter, improving infiltration, rooting, surface firmness and overall turf performance.
